Preparing For a Virtual Interview

There's no doubt about it, this has been a year full of change. And for those looking for a new job, one of the biggest changes is the way they communicate with potential employers. In-person interviews are becoming less and less common, with phone and video interviews becoming a more regular practice for businesses looking to add to their team. 

But what if your experience and talents are in a specific skilled trades field? How can you show that you are the right fit for the job when you can't be there in person? Here are three tips for showing your skilled trades expertise in a phone or video interview.

Focus on Your Certifications

You've put in the hours to receive specific licenses and certifications, passing tests and proving your abilities. The first step for getting a new job is making sure your resume reflects your hard work. Now that you've secured the interview, it's time to take what's on paper and emphasize your certifications.

When you start the interview, one of the first things you'll be asked to do is talk about yourself. This is a great place to bring up your efforts in earning your certifications and pursuit of technical training to be a proficient skilled worker, as well as your dedication to learning so that you can be an asset to your employer. Framing your answer around this topic is a great way to show the interviewer over the phone or on a video call that you know your industry and are committed to continuous education for your employer.

Highlight Projects You've Worked On

It's unlikely that you'll be asked to show your skills as an electrician or plumber or HVAC tech over video. But what you can do is talk about the successful projects you've been a part of. 

Whether it was a large team project you were a part of that had a quick turnaround and received praise from leaders, or a last-minute assignment that you took on without hesitation, previous projects are a great way to show you're the perfect candidate. Think back on your jobs and the projects you worked on. What stands out to you?

What lessons did you learn? What did success look like and how can you mention those in your phone or video interview.

Ask Specific Questions

One of the most common mistakes people make in phone and virtual interviews is not taking advantage of the common end-of-interview question "What questions do you have for me?" Don't be that person and come prepared with questions for the job interviewer.

Having questions ready gives you two advantages. First, it lets you find out more about the company and the job you're interested in. And second, it shows the interviewer your genuine interest in their opportunity.

• What are you looking for in your next team member?
• How would you describe the company's culture?
• How do you see my experience being a fit for this job?
