  • How and When to Ask About Pay in a Job Interview

    South Phoenix, AZ - February 23, 2022

2022-02 Job Agency in South Phoenix, AZ While we may love our jobs, at the end of the day we're all counting on the paycheck. If you're in the midst of a job hunt though, it can feel like a bit of a faux pas to ask about the pay of position while you are interviewing. But how and when do you ask about this critical information? Express Employment Professionals, a business staffing agency in South Phoenix , has pulled together some helpful tips and tricks to guide you through this tricky situation.

    Research the Position

Before you ask about pay, try to get a general idea of what you should be getting paid. This is both to ensure the pay range you're seeking isn't out of line for the position you're interviewing for, and to ensure you know what you're worth. Check online for the average pay ranges for similar positions in your area. Sites such as Glassdoor are great for this and can even sometimes show you how much those in the position you want are getting paid at the company you're interviewing with. Additionally, go in with an idea of idea of what benefits you're looking for. Do you need flexible hours? Paid vacation time? Would you be willing to accept a lesser rate in order to have these extra benefits?

    Don't Ask Too Soon

Ideally, you want the employer to mention the salary range first.  Companies really want a new hire that is interested in the company and the position, not just a paycheck. Instead, use the first interview to get to know the company, their values, and if the position is a good fit for you. This way, you and your potential employer know if you're a good fit for the job. When it comes time to bring it up, be sure to mention how interested you are in the position, why you see yourself as a great fit, and then ask for the salary range. You want to show your interviewer that you're someone interested in the company and job first, and in search of a paycheck second.

    Don't Be Afraid to Negotiate

Know that you are not obligated to accept the first pay offered. Negotiating is a normal part of doing business, and it should be a red flag if you're turned down for the position just because of an ask. The worst thing that can happen is they say no. Just remember to be tactful and polite, and back it up with reasons that make sense.

Once everything is said and done, if the company can't match the pay you want, it's completely understandable to pass on the job offer and dive back into the job search. If you need career help services , or assistance in finding a job, give Express Employment Professionals a call today.
