Job Full Description

Summary/Objective

A Fabrication Welder is responsible for welding various metal components to create structures and products. This may include reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics, selecting, and preparing materials, setting up and operating welding equipment, and inspecting and testing finished products. The welder may also be responsible for performing minor maintenance tasks on welding equipment and ensuring that all safety procedures are followed. It is important for metal fabrication welders to have extensive knowledge of welding techniques and materials, as well as experience with various types of welding equipment and processes.

Essential Functions

  1. Setting up and operating welding equipment, including the GMAW (MIG) and GTAW welding process.
  2. Adjusting machine settings to ensure optimal performance and quality of the final product.
  3. Performing periodic quality checks.
  4. Troubleshooting and resolving any issues that arise with the equipment.
  5. Performing routine preventative maintenance on the equipment to ensure it remains in good working condition.
  6. Performing minor maintenance/repairs on welding equipment as needed.
  7. Training other operators on the proper use and maintenance of the equipment, as well as operational functions.
  8. Reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics to determine the appropriate welding techniques, materials to be used, and specifications required.
  9. Maintaining accurate records and documentation of production, including quantity, quality, and time.
  10. Adhering to all safety guidelines and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.

11.  Perform welding on diverse materials such as carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, and galvanized on various material thicknesses.

12.  Perform welding on diverse materials using various welding processes such as GMAW short circuit, GMAW spray arc, and GTAW.

  1. Using hand tools to cut, shape, and fit metal components prior to welding (if necessary).

14.  Follow department SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures).

  1. Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.

  11. Flexibility to work overtime as needed.
  12. Ability to read a tape measure, calipers, fillet weld gauges, and depth gauges.
  13. Ability to consistently utilize assigned locations i.e., staging lanes / shadow boards.
  14. Ability to become forklift certified.
  15. Willingness to continuously learn and develop new skills.
  16. Knowledge of various welding techniques and processes.

Physical Requirements

  1. Ability to perform the essential job functions safely and successfully.
  2. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  3. Must maintain company machines and tools provided.
  4. Standing for long periods of time.
  5. Repetitive motions.
  6. Good vision.
  7. Lifting and carrying.
  8. Wearing personal protective equipment.
  9. Good hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, heat, cold, fumes, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
