Express is excited to announce that we are conducting an exclusive recruitment for an Executive Director for the Humboldt Botanical Garden.
Are you ready to lead with passion and purpose? The Executive Director (ED) is a pivotal, full-time role responsible for the strategic leadership, financial sustainability, and operational oversight of the Garden. You'll ensure alignment with the Garden Master Plan and Board-approved initiatives, driving our mission forward with energy and enthusiasm. From the beginning, the ED will be instrumental in broad-spectrum fundraising to increase revenue generation.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead with Vision - Oversee daily operations, financial management, fundraising, budgeting, and reporting.
- Inspire Teams - Lead staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and mission-driven work culture.
- Build Excellence - Recruit and develop committed staff and volunteers, ensuring clarity of roles and expectations.
- Champion Growth - Establish professional development opportunities and continuous training.
- Drive Success - Conduct regular performance reviews and develop succession planning strategies.
- Forge Partnerships - Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with vendors, governmental agencies, donors, and partner organizations.
- Ensure Sustainability - Ensure facility maintenance, safety, and long-term sustainability.
- Create Experiences - Manage retail operations and plan, organize, and oversee Garden events.
- Innovate Revenue - Develop and execute a diversified revenue strategy, including major gifts, grants, sponsorships, special events, membership programs, retail operations, and earned income opportunities.
- Cultivate Support - Build and nurture donor relationships, actively soliciting funding.
- Expand Impact - Lead grant writing, compliance, and reporting efforts.
- Collaborate for Growth - Work closely with the Board to develop and implement financial sustainability initiatives.
- Set Ambitious Goals - Establish fundraising and development goals and oversee the creation of fundraising material.
- Monitor Performance - Analyze and optimize fundraising performance.
- Ensure Compliance - Adhere to federal, state, and local regulations, including financial reporting, employment laws, and non-profit governance standards.
- Represent HBG - Serve as the primary spokesperson, representing HBG to stakeholders, donors, and the public.
- Build Networks - Maintain effective relationships with local, regional, and national organizations in horticulture, conservation, and education.
- Promote Our Mission - Champion the Garden’s programs, events, and initiatives.
The “Must Have” Requirements
- Fundraising Dynamo - Proven expertise in fundraising, capital campaigns, donor cultivation, and creative planning for increased financial support.
- Leadership & Management Pro - Proven record of leadership experience, preferably as an Executive Director or CEO with a nonprofit or related organization.
- Financial Guru - Proficiency in financial reporting, budget preparation, fiscal health management, and knowledge of nonprofit governance.
- Communication Ace - Strong persuasive communication skills, including written, public speaking, presentations, and community engagement.
- Event Maestro - Ability to manage multiple projects and events with volunteers and limited staff and resources.
- Tech Savvy - Ability to leverage technology for operational efficiency and digital and social media marketing.
- Passionate Advocate - Passion for botanical gardens, conservation, and community engagement.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
- Strong leadership and team-building skills.
- Demonstrated experience in crafting compelling grant proposals, donor communications, and promotional materials.
Compensation Package
- Annual salary of $85,000 to $110,000 is dependent on relevant work experience
- Paid Vacation (3 weeks)
- Paid Sick Leave (6 days)
- Paid Holidays (8 days)
- IRA with match up to 3%

Anticipated Process and Timeline
- Express will begin screening and interviewing candidates immediately. Top candidates will be submitted to the hiring committee.
- The first round of interviews with the HBG hiring committee is anticipated to be the week of May 19, 2025.
- In-person interviews are preferred but exceptions may be made for out-of-area candidates for the first board interview.
- If the hiring committee determines it to be important, the final candidates will be administered a leadership assessment (online).
- Final in-person interviews are anticipated to be in early June.
- The ideal candidate will be able to start between July 1 and August 1.
