Job Full Description
SUMMARY:
With supervision and direction of the immediate supervisor as needed, plans and directs interactions with children in activities designed to promote children’s social, physical, and intellectual growth by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Know and follow Personnel Policies, Employee Handbook, Administrative Directives, and other guidance as may be provided.
- Implement the guidelines established for classroom operations: curriculum, daily schedule, lesson plans, individual child observations, and plans that address child development competencies found in the Early Learning Outcomes Framework (ELOF), disability support, parent-teacher conferences, home visits, and related functions.
- Complete the initial developmental screening for each child and follow-up evaluations as needed.
- Maintain an ongoing system of developmental assessment for each child to include: observation, recording, portfolio collection, and planning for individual needs. Implement the Creative Curriculum, Teaching Strategies Gold and be familiar with the use of online services.
- Plan individual and group activities to stimulate cognitive, language, social/emotional, and motor skills. Plan alternate periods of strenuous activity with periods of rest or light exercise to avoid overstimulation and fatigue. Plan a balance of child-initiated and teacher-directed activities.
- Comply with and implement daily Safety & Health procedural requirements of the program by:
○ Helping children develop habits of personal & environmental care;
○ Teaching children to care for their clothing and put away toys and books;
○ Develop practices of personal cleanliness and self-care;
○ Serving meals to children in family-style whenever possible;
○ Eating with children as a role model for developing good nutrition habits;
○ Maintaining a safe work environment and consistently practicing all Health/Safety procedures.
- Develop and implement classroom management procedures including:
○ The primary responsibility for the safety of children and co-workers at all times during the day
○ A system of limits, rules, and regulations to be understood by both children and adults;
■ Classroom transition activities;
■ A developmentally appropriate environment;
■ Behavior management plans as needed, following program format;
■ Positive reinforcement for desired behaviors;
■ Supporting children's problem-solving to resolve conflicts;
- Participate in professional development activities including:
○ Giving input regarding T/TA needs to supervisor for consideration;
○ Participate in all program-related training opportunities;
○ Evaluate training attended;
- Communicate regularly with parents;
- Conduct Parent-Teacher Conferences as scheduled based on child's records and teacher observation;
- Attend Parent Center Meetings as requested. Request work schedule change (within the same week) to be authorized by supervisor/Central Office before attendance at scheduled parent meetings;
- Conduct Home Visits as scheduled, according to program guidelines, to promote child and family objectives;
- Substitute at alternate sites or other classrooms as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
The essential functions of this job classification require a minimum attendance rate of no more than eight occurrences within a program year, excluding accommodation plans under ADA, Workers Compensation back-to-work, or Family Medical Leave Act.
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required:
- High school diploma or GED certificate, CDA Credential or equivalent; Degree in ECE or related preferred.
- Teaching Strategies; Gold; must take the required training for inter-rater reliability and update every two years.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to parents, volunteers, community representatives, and other employees of the organization.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to work independently with little to no supervision. Ability to work as part of a team and recognize when teamwork is required.
- Have good interpersonal communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Be knowledgeable of personal computers, database programs, the internet, and email systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

- Regularly lift or move up to 10 lbs; frequently up to 25 lbs; and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Frequently stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Specific vision required includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and work in outside weather conditions. The work environment is in an office and child care setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
