As an essential member of the ophthalmology healthcare team, the Ophthalmology Diagnostic Technician plays a crucial role in assisting ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating various eye conditions and disorders. The technician is responsible for operating diagnostic equipment to obtain images and measurements as ordered by the physician.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Obtain a detailed patient history, including any eye-related symptoms, medical conditions, and medications.
- Administer basic vision tests, such as visual acuity and color vision testing, to gather essential information.
- Conduct a variety of specialized tests, including but not limited to:
- Fundus Photography: Capturing images of the back of the eye to assess the retina and optic nerve.
- Visual Field Testing: Evaluating peripheral vision to detect abnormalities.
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): Creating high-resolution cross-sectional images of the eye's structures.
- A-scan and B-scan Ultrasound: Measuring the size and structure of the eye, useful for diagnosing conditions like glaucoma and retinal detachment.
- Corneal Topography: Mapping the cornea's curvature to assist in fitting contact lenses and diagnosing corneal conditions.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is typically required, although some positions may prefer or require post-secondary training in ophthalmic technology.
- Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is highly regarded.
- Strong communication skills and empathy for patient care.
