Position Overview:
The Sterile Processing Technician (SPD Tech) ensures the availability, sterility, and proper handling of surgical instrumentation and supplies for the operating room and other procedural areas. This role involves disassembling, cleaning, sterilizing, and organizing instruments while collaborating with operating room staff to meet the needs of scheduled surgical cases.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Instrument Preparation & Sterilization
- Sterilize and prepare surgical instruments following established protocols.
- Operate and monitor sterilizers, ensuring proper documentation of temperature, pressure, and time.
- Inspect, assemble, and update surgical instrument tray lists.
2. Maintenance & Inventory Management
- Initiate repairs on damaged instruments as needed.
- Restock workstations and maintain an organized inventory of surgical supplies.
- Perform routine inspection and storage of case carts, instruments, and other SPD items.
3. Compliance & Safety
- Adhere to safety policies, Infection Control, and Universal Precautions.
- Report hazards or non-compliance to designated personnel.
- Stay current on state and federal regulations, professional standards, and accreditation requirements.
4. Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate effectively and professionally with vendors, physicians, staff, and visitors.
- Provide updates and feedback to the Sterile Processing Supervisor and operating room teams.
5. Professional Development
- Participate in continuing education and share knowledge with team members.
- Seek opportunities for growth by accepting challenges and new responsibilities.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association).
- Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.
Preferred:
- 1-3 years of sterile processing experience in an operating room setting.
- Certifications: Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS), Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER).

- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and basic computer skills.

Physical & Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
- Visual and auditory acuity for using computers, telephones, and other equipment.
- Exposure to both non-hazardous and hazardous equipment and materials, including potential bloodborne pathogens and chemical hazards.

Interacts with patients, facility personnel, vendors, administration, and the medical director.
