Ada County is looking for Mosquito Larvicide Field Technicians for the 2025 Season!
Schedule: Four 10's! M-Th or Tu-F from 6:00am – 4:30pm
This is a seasonal position with the opportunity for hire in future seasons.
GENERAL SUMMARY
Larvicide Field Technicians work to control mosquitoes in their larval stage, providing a critical role in keeping Ada County residents safe from mosquito-borne diseases, including West Nile virus. This entry-level position is a great opportunity for those seeking experience in the biological sciences or public health fields. Larvicide Field Technicians receive paid training to become certified pesticide applicators with the Idaho State Department of Agriculture, apply biological control agents, learn about mosquito biology, and work with the latest technology in field biology. This is a full-time (10 hours a day, 4 days a week) seasonal position, where a typical day involves navigating known mosquito breeding sites using GPS software, sampling these locations for mosquito larvae, and treating sites with proper mosquito control techniques where applicable.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Completes work orders by mixing, applying and recording pesticide applications in accordance with work orders and applicable laws.
- Operates application or surveillance equipment (will involve wearing a 25-40 lb pump pack).
- Reads and navigates by paper and digital maps.
- Mixes and applies pesticides.
- Uses mobile and hand-held computers and Global Positioning System (GPS) units.
- Performs routine maintenance of equipment.
- Properly disposes of empty pesticide containers and reinstate materials.
- Uses and maintains all personal protection equipment recommended by product label, SDS and department policy.
- Fabricates and rebuilds equipment.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- May assist in collection, monitoring and distribution of biological control agents.
- May assist in special projects as assigned.
- May assist with training of other employees.
- Performs other related functions as required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of basic mathematics.
- Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to use computers.
- Ability to understand GPS technology for daily use of digital navigation equipment.
- Ability to use GPS equipment for mapping, surveillance and/or pesticide applications.
- Ability to work in the field independently and with peers and public.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- May be cross trained to perform functions for other departments.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- The nature of the work will require the employee to be in the field for long periods of time under various weather conditions.
- The work may require moving, transporting, and using pesticides.
- Must be available to work different shifts as needed.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must work with hazardous materials, heavy equipment and occasionally must negotiate fences, hazardous steep terrain with rough, rocky or wet surfaces.
- At times the employee may be exposed to dogs, farm animals, snakes and biting and stinging insects.
Wage structure:
$17.50/hr + (wage increases possible within first month after training certifications - get paid to train!)
