The First-Class Shipfitter is responsible for using various tools and equipment in the fabrication, assembly, and erection of metal components at different stages of constructing a marine vessel. This role involves working with steel plate and beams, ensuring the fit-up and alignment of units with a focus on quality and precision. The position may require work at different heights, in confined spaces, and in varying weather conditions. Additionally, the role may involve working multiple shifts, 24 hours a day, depending on the number of vessels being constructed at any given time.
Basic Qualifications:
Minimum of 3-5 years of trade experience in shipbuilding or a related field
Strong basic math, reading, and comprehension skills
Ability to read and interpret blueprints using both metric and standard measurements
Knowledge of the layout, fit-up, and fabrication of steel plate and beams
Experience using trade-specific tools such as grinders, hand torches, hydraulic and ratchet jacks, chain falls, come-a-longs, combination squares, framing squares, hand levels, and plumb bobs
Preferred Qualifications:
6+ years of experience in marine, shipbuilding, or construction
Proficiency in setting and erecting units, with knowledge of Datum Lines
Expertise in fit-up, alignment tolerances, and advanced blueprint reading skills
The role requires the practice of strict safety protocols and adherence to industry standards to ensure a safe work environment.
