Job Full Description

The Research Farm Operations Technician will be responsible for participating in the completion of all aspects of Camelina research field operations and will oversee all equipment maintenance within the organization. The position will also be responsible for conducting agronomic field trials. This role offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the success of our breeding and agronomy research endeavors in Camelina crop development.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Participate in completion of all the company’s Camelina field research operation activities in the US to ensure field tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Operate farm/research plot equipment for various field trials and seed production tasks, including site selection, contracting, pre-plant land preparation, planting, spraying, and harvesting.
  • Coordinate the timing of equipment readiness/availability and field activities with the company’s breeding and agronomy teams.
  • Be responsible for oversight, maintenance, and repair of all field research machinery and equipment. Arrange repair of equipment when required
  • Perform chemical applications and other treatments as needed to control pests and diseases in field trials.
  • Conduct the evaluation of elite varieties in Agronomy trials
  • Translate research agronomy trials into improved best management practices, providing greater returns for growers.
  • Prepare budgets that detail anticipated costs for field operations, equipment purchase, and maintenance.
  • Monitor weather conditions to ensure field operations are conducted at appropriate times.
  • Perform other duties as required to meet research needs
  • Demonstrate ownership of research field operations decisions and performance

 

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License, air brakes not required, tanker endorsement preferred
  • Proficiency in farm heavy equipment operation and mechanical knowledge for equipment maintenance
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting and operate power tools
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate them when appropriate
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment
  • Proficient with research farm inventory management and budget preparation
  • This position will be based in Great Falls, Montana with extensive daily travel and up to 20% overnight travel.

 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in agriculture, plant science, agronomy, mechanics or a related field preferred
  • 2+ years of farm and agronomy experience required
  • Recent farming experience is essential
  • Commercial Applicators License required, or ability to obtain upon hire

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds for short distances
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements over long periods of time
  • Requires frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching
  • Requires lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring equipment and materials
