Job Title: Packer/Inspector

Shift Hours:

  • 5:00 AM to 3:30 PM or 3:30 PM to 1:00 AM, 4 days a week.


Job Summary:

The Packer/Inspector is responsible for the handling, inspection, and packing of bags and pouches produced by machinery. This role requires close collaboration with the Machine Operator to ensure products meet quality standards and are packed according to specifications. The Packer/Inspector will also conduct periodic quality checks and maintain a clean and organized work area.


Key Responsibilities:

Pre-Production Functions:

  • Arrive on time for the start of the shift.

  • Review order specifications, including the Work Order, Product Specification Guide (PSG), and mechanical drawings, prior to each job.

  • Compare specifications on the PSG to the work order and pouch template or drawing.

  • Seek clarification from the Machine Operator or Quality Control on any discrepancies before starting the job.

  • Prepare all necessary job-related paperwork, including Roll Audit Sheets, QC Audit Sheets, Count Sheets, and Pre-Printed Labels.

  • Observe machine operation during startup and assist the Machine Operator with minor adjustments.

  • Prepare boxes in advance for packing bags and pouches.

Production Functions:

  • Collate and stack bags and pouches neatly as they accumulate on the output conveyor.

  • Pack bags into specified boxes according to the provided specifications.

  • Close and seal boxes with packing tape once the specified number of bags are packed.

  • Apply case labels to the upper left-hand corner of the short side of each box.

  • Stack finished cases neatly on pallets, adhering to the specified number of cases per layer and layers per pallet.

  • Monitor the cleanliness of the machine and stop it if necessary to address any issues.

  • Monitor product quality and consult with the Machine Operator if any issues arise.

Quality Functions:

  • Conduct periodic quality checks on bags, including dimensions, zipper placement, tear slits, seals, and seal integrity.

  • Check one bag at a specified interval (e.g., one bag per X number of bags produced) to ensure compliance with specifications.

  • Set aside two additional bags for Quality Control to inspect.

  • Record quality check results on the QC Audit Sheet.

  • Alert the Machine Operator and Quality Control to any quality issues.

End of Order Functions:

  • Complete all job-related paperwork and documentation, ensuring it is submitted to the appropriate department.

  • Clear the production line of any scrap film or pouches from the completed job.

  • Return unused boxes to inventory if the box size changes for the next job.

  • Communicate with the incoming shift’s Packer/Inspector to ensure a smooth transition, detailing current orders, upcoming changeovers, and any potential issues.

  3. Work Collaboratively: Operate in tandem with the Machine Operator, following directions and assisting with minor adjustments as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods.

  • Manual dexterity for handling and packing bags.

  • Ability to lift and move boxes and pallets.


Equipment Used:

  • Standard SAE tape measure.

  • Packing tape and labeling tools.

  • Production machinery, including conveyors and packing equipment.


Qualifications:

Skills Required:

  • Attention to detail for identifying defects or inconsistencies.

  • Basic math skills for counting and measuring products.

  • Ability to read both SAE and Metric measurements.

  • Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with the Machine Operator and Quality Control.

Experience Required:

  • Previous experience in a similar role, such as packing, inspecting, or working in a production environment, is preferred.

  • Familiarity with production machinery is a plus.

Education Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Qualities Required:

  • Reliability and punctuality.

  • Team player with strong problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.


Work Schedule:

  • Shift hours: 5:00 AM to 3:30 PM or 3:30 PM to 1:00 AM.

  • 4 days a week.
