A Custodian, also known as a Janitor or Cleaner, is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and orderliness of buildings and facilities. Their primary duties include cleaning and sanitizing spaces, handling waste disposal, and ensuring a hygienic and well-maintained environment for employees, visitors, and other occupants.

Job Description for a Custodian:

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Cleaning and Maintenance:

   • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors in offices, hallways, and common areas.
   • Clean and disinfect restrooms, ensuring all supplies (e.g., soap, toilet paper) are stocked.
   • Empty trash cans and dispose of waste properly.
   • Dust and wipe down furniture, windowsills, and other surfaces.
   • Clean windows and mirrors.
   • Sanitize high-touch areas, such as doorknobs and light switches.

2. Restroom Maintenance:

   • Clean and sanitize restrooms regularly.
   • Restock supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, soap).
   • Ensure cleanliness and hygiene standards are maintained in all restroom facilities.

3. Floor and Carpet Care:

   • Sweep, vacuum, and mop floors as required.
   • Clean carpets by vacuuming, spot cleaning, or using carpet shampoo equipment.
   • Use floor buffers or polishers to maintain floor surfaces.

4. Special Projects and Maintenance:

   • Assist with event setup and cleanup when needed.
   • Maintain custodial supplies and inform management when new supplies are needed.
   • Occasionally assist with minor repairs or notify supervisors of necessary maintenance.

5. Safety and Health Compliance:

   • Follow safety protocols to ensure a clean and hazard-free environment.
   • Use proper cleaning supplies and equipment while maintaining safety standards.
   • Report safety hazards or damage to property promptly.

6. Team Collaboration:

   • Work closely with other custodial staff, supervisors, and facility management.
   • Communicate any needs or issues that affect cleaning schedules or efficiency.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Previous experience in custodial or janitorial work is often preferred but not required.
• Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, and buffers.
• Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and their proper usage.
• Attention to detail and the ability to follow cleaning schedules and routines.
• Good physical stamina and ability to lift heavy items as needed.
• Excellent time management skills.

Work Environment:

• Work is typically in office buildings, schools, hospitals, or other commercial spaces.
• The job may require working at night or early mornings to avoid disruption to daily activities.

Education Requirements:

• A high school diploma or equivalent is often required.
