3 Tips to Cancel a Job Interview Responsibly
Longview, WA - July 28, 2023
Needing to cancel a job interview can be really challenging,
especially if you don’t want to mess up your chances of getting hired. But
sometimes, things happen that are out of our control. You may have had an
unexpected illness or death in the family, or you received another offer.
Regardless of the reason, canceling the interview needs to be done responsibly.
With these tips from a leader in career
hiring, you’ll know what to do if the situation ever arises.
1. Give
plenty of notice
The first thing to do when canceling the interview is to make
sure you are giving the hiring manager plenty of notice. Remember, they have
already set aside time in their day for you. The sooner you can let them know,
the better. This way, they can reach out to other potential candidates or at
least use their time efficiently. Don’t put off letting them know, but at least
notify them within 24 hours of the scheduled time.
2. Show
appreciation
To maintain a positive relationship with the company, you
should show your appreciation for the opportunity. If you still want to be
considered for the role, emphasize your interest in working with them. Even if
you do not plan to pursue the job anymore, it’s still good to let them know you
appreciate them for taking the time to get to know you.
3. Offer
dates to reschedule
Even though you will not be able to make the original time,
you should go ahead and offer up other dates you will be available if you want
to reschedule the interview. This will show that you are still interested in
the company, and it will also show a responsible behavior. If you are not sure
when you will be able to reschedule, let them know you will reach out as soon
as possible.
